Popular geothermal areas in Taupo and Rotorua

In and around Rotorua's geothermal area, steam escapes slowly in parks, riverbanks and waterways. The air was filled with a distinct smell of sulfur. A few minutes' drive from the city center, you'll be able to see boiling geysers and bubbling mud pools.

Huaimangu Volcanic Valley

The volcanic valley was created by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886 and buried the Pink and White Terraces, then known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World". The Waimanggu Volcanic Valley is a 20-minute drive south of Rotorua.

Lunar craters

is a geothermal attraction north of Taupo with a scenic walk. Along the way, mud pits can be seen transpiring due to geothermal activity.
